Clinical Trials Awareness Month -
Ideas for Activities

Here are just some of the many outreach events and educational activities that can be implemented during Clinical Trials Awareness Month.

Please consider being a sponsor or a co-sponsor of special Clinical Trials Awareness Month events or activities this year and in future years to help get the message out to people within your organization or your community, or to specific target audiences.
  • Promote clinical trials awareness at hospitals and other health care facilities by sponsoring or participating in activities such as:

    • Providing education and clinical trials material to staff through Grand Rounds, tumor board meetings, visits to provider offices, presentations to relevant specialty groups, presentations at staff meetings, internal employee newsletters, and making necessary forms available to providers in a secure area of your organization's Web site;

    • Providing education and clinical trials materials to patients by developing disease- or study-specific brochures for use in inter-disciplinary areas, and displaying posters in patient waiting areas and treatment rooms;

    • Producing seminars on the benefits of clinical trials and how to access information about them; or

    • Encouraging the facility to identify and promote a contact for patients and staff who have questions about clinical trials.

  • Organize informational meetings, with a meal provided, for community physicians regarding topics that may reduce physician/provider bias, such as:
    • The value of clinical trial participation;
    • Current research opportunities;
    • Meetings scheduled on a regular basis to provide updates on clinical trials; and
    • Mechanisms for feedback and follow-up reporting to referring physicians.

  • Invite local social agencies working with minorities to your hospital or health care facility to discuss ways to increase the diversity of patients enrolled in clinical trials. Among the topics to discuss:
    • Common fears and misconceptions about clinical trials and how to address those issues;
    • Cultural concerns; and
    • Language and socio-economic barriers.

  • Organize a speakers bureau of qualified health professionals and clinical trials participants to provide a consistent, well-supported program to any group requesting it.

  • Sponsor a special event to honor clinical trials participants who have battled cancer.

  • Distribute clinical trials awareness materials at community locations, such as:
    • Local health agencies;
    • Doctor’s offices;
    • Health care clinics;
    • Health fairs;
    • Flu clinics; and
    • Senior centers.

  • Distribute clinical trials awareness materials through existing programs and communication networks, such as:
    • The Michigan Breast and Cervical Cancer Control Program;
    • Public relations and marketing departments; and
    • Parish nurse programs.

  • Invite qualified health professionals and clinical trials participants to speak at special events, such as:
    • Brown bag lunches for employees;
    • Special hospital- or health agency-sponsored events for the public;
    • Seminars about men’s and/or women’s health issues; and
    • Meetings of community and volunteer groups.

  • Collaborate with the media to publicize local hospital clinical trials programs, focusing on the advantages of clinical trial participation and information that addresses common misconceptions.
    • Write monthly updates and articles in local newspapers.
