Colorectal Cancer Awareness
Month -
Ideas for Activities |
|
There are many outreach and educational activities
that can be implemented during Colorectal Cancer Awareness Month
in March. Below are just some of the events and activities that
your organization could coordinate to increase awareness about
colorectal cancer.
Please consider being a sponsor or a co-sponsor
of a special event or activity this year and in future years
to help get the message about colorectal cancer awareness to
people within your organization or your community, or to specific
target audiences.
|
- Run a pre-recorded telephone message about the
importance of colorectal cancer screening that clients can listen
to while on hold at your organization.
- Disseminate and discuss the MCC Guidelines for
the Early Detection of Colorectal Cancer (available at www.michigancancer.org/WhatWeDo/
ColorectalCancer.cfm#guidelines; revised Feb. 2, 2005) among
health care providers in your organization and community.
- Discuss the MCC Recommendations for Colorectal
Cancer Screening and Follow-Up at specialty group staff
meetings and during CME offerings.
- Cooperate with local television and radio stations
to promote programming that highlights colorectal cancer awareness
issues.
- Cooperate with local print media to feature colorectal
cancer-related articles, editorials and advertisements.
- Offer free or reduced cost colorectal cancer screening
in your area, with a link to follow-up providers if screening results
are abnormal.
- Target the community served with a mass mailing,
urging individuals to call and get a free fecal occult blood
testing (FOBT) kit for home use.
- Allow the return of specimen kits for testing
through April.
- Provide opportunities to increase the skill level
of local health care providers who perform colorectal cancer screening.
- Communicate available CME offerings through
organizational newsletters and online.
- During March, offer a colorectal cancer education
series that includes an overview of colorectal cancer, nutritional
issues, screening, and treatment options.
- Encourage employees, members of your local community,
and your family and friends to talk to their health care provider
about colorectal cancer and getting screened. Ways to get the message
out could include:
- newsletters and mailing inserts;
- brochures and posters at health care provider
offices, community centers, health clinics, post offices, and
libraries;
- electronic cards and e-mails; and
- feature item on your organization’s web site.
- Invite/provide qualified health professionals
and colorectal cancer survivors to speak at special events in your
community. Topics to highlight could include the importance of screening
and early detection, the types of screening tests, and patient information
to help overcome barriers to screening. Event ideas include:
- brown bag lunches for employees;
- informational sessions for local health care
providers;
- teas or luncheons for community members; and
- meetings of community clubs and organizations
- Offer information to your community about colorectal
cancer and the importance of screening through activities such as
health fairs, parish nurse networks, and educational outreach programs.
- Organize and support events in your community
to raise awareness about colorectal cancer, including run/walks
or golf tournaments.
