About the Initiative
On April 12, 2007, the Lake/Osceola Cancer Screening Project offered a free cancer screening event for the rarely and never screened population ages 64 and under, who were uninsured or underinsured and resided in Lake or Osceola counties.

Impetus for the Collaboration
Barb Rivenburgh, Michigan Department of Community Health, encouraged District Health Department #10 to spearhead the collaborative group to work on the project.

Results
19 people received cancer screening services who otherwise may not have since they did not have health insurance that covered the services nor the resources to pay out of their pocket.

Lessons Learned
AA single agency or group could not pull off an event like this. Each agency or partner had specific roles in making the event a success. The volume of work and energy that is needed required the collaborative effort.

MCC Recognition
"Lake/Osceola Cancer Screening Project” received the Michigan Cancer Consortium’s 2007 Spirit of Collaboration Honorable Mention Award. The annual award is presented to member organizations that have done outstanding collaborative work to significantly move comprehensive cancer control activities forward in Michigan.
